Low Calorie Recipes: Store Bought Salad Dressings Part II
Low Calorie Recipes: Store Bought Salad Dressings Part II
Just a couple weeks ago I had wrote a low calorie recipes blog post on some Salad Dressings I ordered through The Low Carb Grocery. This time I got another chance to order even more for some taste testing.
What I ordered:
1. Ranch Dressing
2. Chipotle Ranch Dressing
3. Sweet Onion Dressing
4. Ranch Mayo
5. Honey Mustard Mayo
6. Miracle Mayo
7. Hickory Smoke BBQ Sauce
8. Bacon Dip
Salad Dressings
There is quite the variety of dressings made by Walden Farms and these are 0 calorie dressings. A lot of people find these dressings revolting and some find them to really help with dieting cravings when going to single digit body fat. I will list the ones I tried here and give my opinion on their taste and whether or not I would buy them again.
Ranch:
– It was sweet and tangy (vinegar taste) with a distinct ranch flavour.
– Texture was much more liquid like than traditional Ranch but it wasn’t bad.
– Definitely smelled like ranch and I seemed to like it.
I would buy this one again but use it with salads and mix it with food to enhance flavour.
Chipotle Ranch:
– It has a bit of bite (mildy spicy) with a distinct chipotle/oniony taste.
– Texture was much more liquid like than traditional Ranch but it wasn’t bad.
– Smelled like chipotle ranch and vinegar
Not bad if you mixed it with foods and it does give a spicy flavour. I would buy this one again.
Sweet Onion:
– Definitely Sweet from the splenda used and has a light onion taste.
– Texture was liquid like the others but not bad (good for a salad dressing).
– Smelled like it tasted (sweet and onion) but not over powering.
Its okay but it was a tad too sweet because of the splenda so it wasn’t my favourite.
Mayo’s
A zero calorie mayo does sound appealing to those who love mayonnaise BUT unfortunately most of Walden Farm’s Mayo products just didn’t cut it for me. I could see maybe using ithem as a spread in a sandwich or with tuna but by itself it didn’t taste very good. You can check out one of my own homemade mayo recipes here (not calorie free). I did however enjoy the Honey Mustard Mayo.
Honey Mustard Mayo
– This mayo had a distinct honey mustard flavour that does a good job masking the “not so Mayo flavour” these products have.
– Smelled like honey mustard mayo (smell helps the flavour)
– The Texture was fairly thick compared to the dressings but not as thick as traditional mayo.
By far my favourite of the 3 mayos I tried and I really enjoyed using this one as a dip for my veggies. I would buy this one again.
Miracle Mayo:
– This mayo does not taste like Miracle Whip or Hellmans but it does have a small sweet mayo like hint of traditional mayo.
– Has a very mild taste and may be good as a spread or with tuna BUT by itself it is too sweet compared to traditional mayo.
I probably would NOT buy this one again, unless I was eating sandwiches or wanted to try a canned tuna salad sandwich.
Ranch Mayo:
– This one was probably my least favourite of the mayos I tried. It Didn’t smell like mayo or ranch but was actually quite pungent (sour herb wise)
– It had a weird flavour of herb and vinegar and really didn’t taste like ranch or mayo.
– It didn’t taste great by itself so maybe mixed with food it might add some flavour.
I probably won’t be buying this one again.
BBQ Sauce & Bacon Dip
Summer is near and that means BBQing time! One of the best parts to BBQing meat on the grill is the spicy sweet BBQ sauce used that is usually smothering my steak or poultry. Well as you might have guessed BBQ sauces like Bullseye are NOT calorie free and contain some sugars and salt. This isn’t a terrible choice however if getting a ripped six pack is your goal for the summer it sure helps to have some secret weapons on your hands.
Hickory Smoked BBQ Sauce:
– This one was probably one of my favourite products I ordered.
– It smelled like hickory smoke bbq sauce.
– Texture was much more liquid like than Bullseye BBQ sauce but not terrible.
– The flavour was initially sweet and was quite good then it tapered off to a spicy hickory flavour
I liked it and think it would be a good substitute for BBQ when cooking and eating meat in the summer. I Definitely will buy again.
Bacon Dip:
Walden Farms also carries a variety of Dips for veggies. They make it more thick by adding a bit more xantham gum. Considering it contains no fats or oils it works quite well.
– It tasted VERY mild like bacon and vinegar and smelled like bacon and vinegar.
– There wasn’t much flavour to it so the lack of taste excitement probably wouldn’t have me buying it again.
My Favourites
Overall my favourites from this order would have to be the Honey Mustard Mayo, BBQ Sauce, and the Ranch Dressing. When mixed with food these can really spice up low calorie recipes or nutrition plans.
